Mercury Auto Insurance
Named after the Roman god of commerce and travel, Mercury General hopes to combine the two. The company is the parent of a group of insurers, including Mercury Casualty Company, that write all risk classifications of automobile insurance in about a dozen states. However plain old private auto insurance accounts for nearly 85% of premiums written. Mercury General also sells homeowners, mechanical breakdown, commercial and dwelling fire, and commercial property insurance. The company sells its policies through more than 4,500 independent agents -- with about 1,000 each in California and Florida. Chairman George Joseph founded Mercury Casualty in 1961; he and his wife own more than 50% of the company.

Mercury Insurance: Or, A Lesson In Professionally Lying To The Customer.
Pros: It's like giving to charity, I'm told.
Cons: If your idea of insurance involves you paying money for no real coverage...
This is a very important Epinion to me. If you've read some of my stuff, you know that I absolutely hate companies who have made policy out of bilking the customer out of their rights in order to boost their profit margin.
Mercury Insurance, no problem if no accidents
Pros: Low premiums. Good discounts for good drivers. Will insure older "classic" autos
Cons: Poor reputation for claims. Renewal statements contain hidden costs.
I am recently considering changing insurance companies after seeing Mercury Insurance at the bottom of the list in a recent Consumer Reports customer service poll, and came here to read and comment on my own experience.
